Before and Afters of Breast Enlargement
Breast Enlargement or Breast Augmentation
Breast enlargement mammoplasty (also known as breast augmentation) is surgery designed to enlarge the breasts. Women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts (sometimes due to pregnancy or weight loss) seek this procedure to help restore confidence and improve the appearance of their breasts. Breast enlargement also is used as a corrective surgery for women who have breasts of different sizes.
Breast enlargement is usually quite successful at making the breasts larger and fuller. Implanted breasts tend to be a bit more round and less saggy than natural breasts of the same size. Most women consider these differences an improvement. Implants that are filled with saline or salt water are now being used for breast augmentation procedures.
Dr. Fortes will select a saline breast implant that will work best with your body size and lifestyle. To prepare the breast area for surgery, Dr. Fortes will make small incisions either in the crease under your breast or under the nipple. Once the breast implant is inserted, it is then filled with saline to achieve the desired size and shape of the breast.
This surgery is normally performed as outpatient surgery under general anesthesia and takes approximately two to three hours. Most patients can return to work within five to six days following breast surgery. Sutures are removed in seven to ten days and you may need to wear a surgical support bra during the recovery period. You can resume exercise and other strenuous activities after one month.
Dr. Fortes also will discuss with you the risks associated with breast enlargement, such as excessive bleeding, infection or desensitization of the nipples, as well as review the benefits to having this breast procedure.
Breast Lift Plastic Surgery
Mastopexy, or breast lift, is a procedure used to safely lift sagging breasts, often caused by aging and also pregnancy.
During breast lift surgery, excess skin is removed from the breasts and the nipples are raised to a higher position to accommodate the change and make the breasts appear natural and also more youthful in their appearance. Some patients may combine breast augmentation and breast lift for optimal results. Dr. Fortes will determine if both procedures are right for you.
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you will want to postpone a breast lift.
The mastopexy procedure is generally performed as outpatient surgery and lasts two to three hours. Most patients can return to work four to five days after surgery. Dr. Fortes will discuss with you all risks and any concerns you may have about the surgery.
Breast Reduction Surgery
Extra body weight as a result of very large breasts can cause a variety of health problems including back and neck pain, skin irritation and difficulty breathing.
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure used to remove fat, tissue and excess skin from the breast, making the breast smaller, lighter and firmer. The nipple is also repositioned in proportion to the new breast size.
For best results, the breasts should be fully developed before surgery is performed. However, if large breasts are causing serious health problems in younger patients, Dr. Fortes may recommend this procedure take place sooner. This surgery also should be postponed for women who are planning to breast feed.
The procedure takes about three to five hours under general anesthesia, and your recovery period will last from seven to 10 days. Most women can return to work in about two weeks but should avoid lifting or strenuous exercise for the next three to four weeks. For several weeks following surgery you will need to wear a support bra to help reduce swelling and bruising.
Because breast reduction surgery is usually performed to correct a medical problem, please check with your healthcare provider to determine if your health insurance covers this procedure.
